भारत में हर साल 24 दिसंबर को राष्ट्रीय उपभोक्ता दिवस मनाया जाता है। यह दिवस तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री राजीव गांधी की पहल पर 9 दिसंबर 1986 को उपभोक्ता संरक्षण विधेयक पारित किया गया, जिसे राष्ट्रपति के हस्ताक्षर के बाद देशभर में लागू किया गया। कई सालों से भारत में हर साल 24 दिसंबर को राष्ट्रीय उपभोक्ता संरक्षण दिवस मनाया जा रहा है।
1991 और 1993 में इस अधिनियम में संशोधन किए गए। अधिक से अधिक अधिनियम का इस्तेमाल हो सके इसके लिए साल 2002 के दिसंबर महीने में फिर से एक व्यापार संशोधन लाया गया। इसके बाद ही यह अधिनियम को 15 मार्च 2003 से लागू कर दिया गया। 5 मार्च 2004 को इसे पूर्ण रूप से नोटिफाई कर दिया गया।
24 दिसंबर साल 1986 को उपभोक्ता संरक्षण अधिनियम हर साल 15 मार्च को विश्व उपभोक्ता अधिकार दिवस मनाया जाता है। इस दिन को मनाने के लिए को सेमिनार का आयोजन कर उपभोक्ताओं को जागरूक भी किया जाता है। प्रत्येक क्षेत्र में ग्राहक को ठगा जा रहा है। उसका नुकसान हो रहा है फिर भी उसके पास न्याय मांगने के लिए कोई कानून नहीं था। ग्राहक सहने करने के अलावा कुछ नही कर पा रहा था। सामान्य आर्थिक परिस्थितियों में ग्राहक व्यापारी के अधिक आर्थिक प्रभाव से शोषित होता रहा था,उसकी आवाज़ शासन तक नहीं पहुँचती थी।
9अप्रैल 1980 को कानून समिति की सूचना का अधिकार उपभोक्ता मामले,खाद्य एवं सार्वजनिक वितरण मंत्रालय ने उपभोक्ताओं अधिकार दिए सुरक्षा का अधिकार, सूचित किए जाने का अधिकार, चुनने का अधिकार, सुने जाने का अधिकार, समस्या के समाधान का अधिकार।
